Graduate degrees in liberal arts aim to provide a breadth of knowledge. Many universities offer graduate degrees in liberal arts and the humanities, and many of them allow students to tailor their program to suit their individual interests and needs. Generally, these degrees encourage the exploration and exchange of ideas and are less career specific. Graduate students in liberal arts programs often care deeply about the pursuit of knowledge and seek new ways of thinking. Many liberal arts programs are considered "liberating", allowing students a chance to open their minds.
Liberal arts programs, while standalone within the university, are often interdisciplinary in nature, drawing upon the experience of professors in other programs. Learning occurs both in a classroom setting and outside the classroom in active groups and workshops. There might be additional one-on-one sessions with a professor, adviser or mentor, as well as group seminar discussions.
Students may choose to focus their liberal arts studies in one or more of the following areas: philosophy, art, history, ethics, religion, language and literature, among others. There is usually no required undergraduate major, other than completion of the degree with solid academic standing. Regardless of the track of study, liberal arts graduate programs foster creativity and individual intellectual growth.
