2016 Top Counseling Graduate Programs

Each of the top 50 schools with graduate programs in counseling received an average student rating of 3.86 or higher in seven specific areas, including student satisfaction with degree, career advising, and networking opportunities. Many of the schools on this list, such as Governors State University and University of La Verne, offer graduate degrees in counseling for below $12,000 per year. The number one school on our list, The College of New Rochelle, has an annual tuition rate of $16,842. 

Students at The College of New Rochelle praised the faculty and administrative support in their reviews. "The admissions department and other administrative departments work hard to assist students with whatever their needs are and to make attending school while working as smooth a process as possible," one student writes. Another states that the faculty are "very dedicated and knowledgeable." At Mercer University, students felt similarly strongly about the quality of their education, giving it an average rating of 4.40. As one student put it, "the course load is fair and the professors are excellent."

Methodology

Our goal in presenting this school data is to create a standardized and trustworthy method to assess institutions based on reliable statistics. In order for a school to be eligible to be featured on a Top Programs List, at least five students from that particular major must have submitted feedback on their institution.

Together with our internal recommend rate data, which is calculated based on tens of thousands of student reviews submitted to our site, the data used in the school listings were gathered in 2015-2016 from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This site is the primary governmental entity for gathering and presenting data related to education. NCES data is updated annually. However, in many cases the most recently available data will not be for the current academic year. Additionally, tuition rates may vary by program, so prospective students should contact a representative from your institution of choice for more details.
