I took upper division classes both at APU and UAA. The coursework at UAA is much more rigorous and formal. The coursework at APU is a joke. Classes are often canceled by faculty and little attention is paid to preparing courses. Few courses are offered. Undergraduate courses are combined with graduate courses. One graduate credit costs $650. Please do not consider this as a worthwhile university. I like my advisor however and was able to generate good research here despite the poor offerings.

My school was a private school that gave very education. It was also very liberal, but had a good sense of community.

The graduate program is very small, personal and allows more interaction with the professors and cohort. The tuition is high but the quality of the professors are varied. Some have a great deal of experience and some are recent graduates pressing further education. All professors work in the field as they teach and are very insightful. The are also very helpful in the aid of all student learning. The work load is demanding but very interesting and easy to follow.

Faculty quality is mixed. Expect more from a doctoral program. Changes are being made to earn APA accreditation which will improve the quality of the program.

The greatest thing about my graduate program is that it can be independently structured. I am working in a context in which no program currently exists, that is, the intersection of philosophy, Tlingit oral traditions, and Tlingit language revitalization. Tlingit is an endangered Alaska Native language, and academic work such as this can help us understand the history, present state, and dynamics involved in a language revitalization effort. The availability of a program which can be tailored to needs such as these makes it ideal for my project. The negative aspect of my graduate program follows the same logic: There is relatively little available in terms of already-established structural support for this sort of research and study.

I feel that the school is great for getting an education. However, it location is not ideal and without your own transportation you will struggle to get to class.

I love the small class sizes and working with peers in my industry. The only downside would be cost of living and transportation. If you are a traditional student, this can get expensive. My network of friends and colleagues on campus is the best I've ever experienced while going to college. In addition, the classes are challenging and extremely relevant.

There are many positive aspects of Alaska Pacific University's Outdoor and Environmental Education Program. The accessibility to the wilderness and the public's emphasis on environmental issues is astounding. Furthermore, the program integrates APU's "Active Learning" motto into each course, allowing for experiential opportunities within every classroom. The campus is small, centrally located, and has access to a plethora of local trails and parks. APU also has a farm campus in Palmer that acts as a centerpiece in the OEE program. The downfalls of APU's program is the lack of affordable local housing, the lack of technological advancement, and the fairly limited social network of students. However, the latter is directly related to the small size and lack of necessary infrastructure of the university.
