"GO TO ANY OTHER SCHOOL IF POSSIBLE! The office staff is lazy, rude, and rarely helpful. Teachers are OK, some good, most bad- by bad I mean they ramble on about non related course material, they teach directly from the book without adding helpful professional experience or knowledge to the lessons, or they just cancel class a lot. The facilities are new but rarely operable- frequent wifi and power outages. They love prioritizing their atheltics above education, the sports teams just got 3 new tour buses while the regular students have just 2 small shuttle buses that resemble a short bus. Student population is OK, most kids complain every class about having to actually read or do some work when the teacher asks for participation- a lot of kids don't even try to participate and just scroll on their devices. Only good thing thats happened in 3 years at this school is the distribution of iPads to kids for $1, but it's honestly the least they could do when they charge $5000+ for classes every semester"

"Enrolling at Norfolk State University is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I learned so much about life and met so many wonderful people. To this day, my former professors are always willing to help me with my career. The staff and professors genuinely care about the students' welfare and progress. I had a final on the day my graduation application was due and my academic advisor drove me across campus to ensure I met the deadline! As a teacher, I am proud to say that I've inspired many of my former students to enroll at Norfolk State and they are very happy to have done so. I've made life-long friends at Norfolk State from different degree programs and they are all happy and successful alumni. I am sure that your experience will be even more memorable, since the campus has grown drastically since I graduated. Along with a new student center and library, there is a completely new landscape which makes the campus even more beautiful. No matter which degree program you choose, you will feel at home at Norfolk State. BEHOLD!"

"Norfolk State University was a great school to attend and I would recommend it to anyone. The financial department worked with me great with all the different sources of funds like grants and scholarships and cash and loans. My professors were amazing. They were very smart and they were very patient with students that it took a few more examples for them to grasp the concept. They had so much confidence in each student. Also my professors wrote breath taking letters of recommendations when it can to applying for jobs. The one thing that I take away from the university and always brag in stories I tell people is that the dean of my department was the one who set up the interview with the company I still work for today, 15 years later. I have no clue where I would be without that help and support for the university. I am the first person in my family to graduate from college. So I feel Norfolk State University broke the chain for my family by accepting me as a student and providing me with an opportunity for a career. Now my kids and grand kids will have an opportunity for more than my parents and grandparents had in life. I could never payback and thank my university enough. It is a great university and anyone would be blessed to attend there. Did I mention it is only fifteen minutes from Virginia Beach? One more thing I almost forgot. We helped with Habit for Humanitys program at Norfolk State."

"I really enjoyed attending NSU. The courses were interesting and the faculty and staff were genuinely interested in my goals. For me, the only missing piece would be a little more career preparedness education. When I graduated, it was difficult to find employment in my area of specialization without having any work experience."

"Norfolk State University was like a home. I didn't want to go to far away from home so it was the perfect choice. The campus was inviting and most people were friendly. I was able to connect with my advisor and classmates on a personal level and make lifelong friendships. There is always someone to help you out if needed."

"Attending Norfolk state University has been great!!. This university is ideal for mothers that wish to have their children on campus with them. I'm currently a single mother of 2 young sons and having them with me at school for a low price is awesome."

"I am currently pursuing my Masters Degree in Professional School Counseling from Norfolk State University. The professors make sure to take the time you need to assist you with your understanding of the curriculum. I also received my Bachelors Degree in Social Work from Norfolk State University as well. I can honestly say that the impact this school has had on my career path has been nothing short of beneficial."

"Norfolk State University is really a great school. In my undergraduate career i was provided with all of the skills and knowledge that i needed to prepare me for my career. The only thing that i wish was different would be my practicum experience. I did not really get to obtain a lot of experience as i hoped for, but overall i had a great experience at Norfolk State. I am actually pursing my Masters degree in Urban Education at Norfolk State now and i love it!"

"I enjoyed the experience of attending an HBCU but did not find the academics at this school overly stimulating. As a nontraditional student, I really enjoyed that many of the other students were also nontraditional."

"I enjoyed the closeness of my graduate class. We teamed up to study and to make sure we understood the content covered. The school could do better in helping to create better writers but otherwise, I enjoyed my time there."

"Norfolk State University gave me the opportunity to not only gain a great degree, but also a second family. The atmosphere of this university is comparable to no other in terms of culture and rigor. Even currently the university is working to improve its overall student experience by renovating their current buildings and still adding new buildings to enhance the already great experience they give."

"I love college, it is a great and wonderful learning experience. It provides the opportunity to develop important skill sets to become successful in a career of ones choice. College sets the foundation for your career and offers work experience as well in the form of an internship, etc."

"An HBCU taught me how to be open to other cultures, as well as embracing my own. I joined numerous organizations, was active in the community, but most importantly I became a better person throughout my journey. Every college/ university has something great to offer. Norfolk State has so much to offer, and is a great University to build off of. Meaning, if you want to start an organization, become active in an organization, or make an impact on the community; it is the perfect place to start."

"Norfolk State University is a great choice when price, education and support are of concern. There are many students, yet there is a "home" feeling within the student body; you are not simply a number! Curriculum is set up to the point and there is always a helping hand from teachers, peers, mentors and campus programs or services. You will never be bored or lonely with the campus activities and school spirit that is always present."

"Some areas of the graduate program were challenging and other areas were a little simpler then they should have been, overall a great program. The faculty are currently working on revision of the program to maintain a challenging and rewarding educational environment."

"Tell us about your college experience.I feel that the school was a good fit for me. I am not wealthy and do not come from a wealthy family. Norfolk State University is a predominately black working class school so people there understood the financial troubles. There are a lot of opportunities at Norfolk State as for as internships and extracurricular activities. I feel that the school really did a lot more than other schools to ensure students' success. I took one class at a nearby school (Old Dominion University) because Norfolk State University was not offering a particular class that I needed that semester. Old Dominion University was a lot larger and more "congested". I was overwhelmed because there were so many people. In addition, I did not see as many internship or job opportunties advertised in their student eNewsletter. I feel that NSU goes above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to making sure that there students are successful. I love my school!Would you get the same degree if you could start over?If I had the opportunity to go back to school, I would choose the same degree. Sociology is a little "broader" than social work. With my sociology degree, I can do what a social worker does. Or, I could go back to school and become a professor. Or, I can engage in social research. It is not the highest pay field but how much money does one really need to be happy and survive anyway? I am satisfied with my choice. I initially had a science major because everyone was saying that it would guarantee me the "big bucks" but I was miserable because I did not like that major. You have to "do you" because YOU are the one who will have to deal with the consequences...not your mom or dad or anyone else. What advice can you offer other students? My number one tip is to do a little school work each day. This keeps the work from piling up and will keep you from having to do an all nighter. Regardless if it is only 30 minutes a day, do something school related everyday including the weekends to keep yourself from getting "backed up". Also, enjoy your college years and time in college. It really is a great experience to have. It is not just about future earning potential. Schools helps broaden your mind and helps you to grow as a person!"

"The education and experience I have gotten from the Norfolk State University Graduate School of Music are beyond valuable and represent a solid bridge to my career and working life. The small class sizes, one on one teacher/student interaction, and availability of teachers for advisement and consultation help to enhance the educational experience. I truly appreciate the advantages I was afforded by attending NSU and I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to take part in a positive progressive graduate school program."
