Student & Graduate Reviews

Degree: Mathematics

There is very little support/ few opportunities for local residents in the masters program for statistics. The quality of education is fantastic for the cost. The professors genuinely care about student success.

I have just entered my first semester of grad school, and I couldn't be happier with my program at ODU. I chose ODU for it's AACSB accreditation, and accessibility to online classes. I am able to work full time while attending class and get a quality education. The faculty has been helpful thus far, and knowledgeable in their field of study.

Pro's include a strong faculty support system with competent, encouraging masters and PhD research advisers; inter-department research collaborations within hot and current fields: Program requirements that ensure you will attain the education and experience necessary to function efficiently in your intended post graduate field; and an active location that is less than an hour away from local beaches and less than three hours away from beautiful mountain ranges if you enjoy outdoor recreation. Con's are limited or relatively expensive parking for commuters; occasionally cramped or restricted laboratory space for teaching classes if you're a teaching assistant; and a limited number of available graduate level courses for higher education.

Degree: Elementary Education
Graduation Year: 2014

The graduate program offers a variety of classes in the evening and online, so it is easy to work around difficult schedules. There is very little financial aid available, but the faculty is knowledgeable, helpful, and for the most part accessible.

Degree: Liberal Arts
Graduation Year: 2015

I find this program to be very academically rigorous with high expectations for student achievement. Professors are sometimes unable to meet with or engage in discussion with students. Easy to find but expensive parking, with all buildings easy to find and close together. Overall great experience!

Taking the Masters in Engineering Management courses via CD has been very easy and worthwhile. I learned more than I thought I would, it is very affordable, and easy to do.

Old Dominion University has many valuable components, but of course, the experience will vary by lab. I am in a lab that is highly competitive because we are doing cutting edge research. There is a departmental scholarship as well as teaching assistantships available. The area around the university is hit or miss. Directly outside of the university is an area where no student should venture. However, just a five minute drive away is a lovely neighborhood with great restaurants and an indie theater. Of course you are also only 30 minutes from the beach. The cost of living here is not inexpensive and you need to be cautious about where you choose to live. Overall, I have been very impressed with the faculty and have enjoyed the student body.

Degree: Counseling
Graduation Year: 2015

The Counseling program at Old Dominion University is wonderful. The professors are extremely knowledgeable and supportive. Although ODU is a bigger university, it does not feel that way. The only con has nothing to do with the actual university. We are made aware of any crime that is committed on campus by email, which then seems like there is quit a bit of criminal activity. The surrounding area is not known for being the safest area. However, ODU is working very hard at keeping everyone safe and informed.

Degree: Physical Therapy
Graduation Year: 2016

Professors, adjuncts, and TA's are very knowledgeable and willing to help. You can tell everyone is very serious about what they do and is here to help the students become good PT's. The best part of our program are the Standardized Patients that we get to utilize. I feel that those sessions really help prepare us for the "real experience" in a clinic/hospital.
