"I am impressed with the staff at SHSU, they seem to be very supportive of the students. For example, my first visit on campus, I was somewhat lost trying to locate buildings and personnel. I was surprising amazed at the assistance of the professors and students that would walk up to me to see if I was lost. Not every campus is like that. The graduate program staff always seem to be able to answer questions and find ways to assist us, the students. I am proud to have been selected to SHSU. I believe SHSU is an excellent atmosphere for students, I have and will recommend it."

"The support and mentoring is above and beyond. Administration truly cares about your education and goals. Opportunity to excel career even before graduation is assisted by professors and administration. The only con is as a commuter I do not get to bond with my graduate cohort as I would like."

"The new campus at the Woodlands is high-tech, however, socially it feels estranged from main campus."

"I am currently enrolled in the distance education graduate program, and have had success thus far. The classes are relevant, challenging, and the professors are knowledgeable and accessible. I attended SHSU as an undergrad and enjoyed my experience there, as well. A drawback of distance education are the relationship building opportunities, but as a current Special Education teacher with three children, I am pleased that SHSU can offer such a quality distance education program."

"If you are looking for an English MA program with lots of faculty support and contact, then Sam Houston is the right program for you. The whole time I was at Sam, every faculty member that I worked with encouraged me and helped me build my publication list. Sam is in a small, sleepy Texas town, but you will find internationally recognized professors who are willing to help you start your career. Funding is not the best through the department, but if you apply for scholarships at the university level, you can get a lot of your tuition covered. They also try and help with travel funding for students, so if you present at a conference, you should be able to get some help with air and hotel cost. All in all, I would highly recommend that you look at this program."

"Some say teaching is a job that you pursue when all other opportunities have failed. Others go into teaching with the idealistic idea to “change the world.” And of course, many go into teaching for the glorious over-the-top pay and three-month summer vacation. Realistically, those who purposely go into the profession have one thing in common; I, like other teachers, have the heart and drive to create a learning environment that not only promotes the importance of communication, but that of respect, motivation, responsibility, socialization, professionalism, maturity, and give the education system a much needed modern reform. Ultimately, when you get that message five years later from that student that said what you taught them changed their life, wither it be content specific or life related, as an educator, you did your job. Although society has placed more importance on education, the current state of economics and government has caused districts and teachers, counselors, and administrators to increase quality and scores, while decreasing resources and time. As educators, we must find the happy medium, however hard it may be, to utilize the time given and resources allotted to maximize students learning capabilities. Simply put, some think we must create miracles. We can’t. But it is our job to do our very best, and we cannot fail doing so. We are a country that values education. And as our teachers have paid it forward to us, we must pay it forward to the next generation and give them the best quality education they deserve. In order to better our society and create leaders, politicians, fellow educators, basketball and football players, reporters, businessmen, and mother and fathers, we must be able to give them the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in life. That is the ultimate goal of education, and we must be able to “play the hand with the cards we are dealt.” I feel that my graduate program will enable me to "play the game.""

"I am Music Therapy Equivalency student. The program is new, and not fully developed yet. There is little financial aid, however the program is growing rapidly. It is small and intimate, making each student an important part of the system. Since the field itself is growing and changing, there are a lot of changing aspects within the program."

"Sam Houston State University has great faculty and a great exchange office. As a graduate student I have been able to participate in semester long exchange programs. Financial aid is average, but not everyone in the office is aware of the scholarships they offer. You have to search the site and no what you need. I have never worked with more helpful faculty."

"The Forensic Science Graduate Program is an excellent program at Sam Houston State University that provides hands-on experience which will jump start a student's career after graduation. The faculty and staff are extremely qualified in their fields and push their students to strive for excellence. The cons to this program are that this program is very limited in the number of students it accepts every year and that the program is only two years long so it requires a lot of work and the students undivided attention in a short amount of time. Overall the hard work will be worth it upon graduation because this is an excellent program guaranteeing success."

"The program has been stimulating and intriguing. However, the professors don't always explains in detail how they want the homework or what they expect on the tests. The classes are as difficult as you would expect a masters class to be. The professors are usually very quick to respond to any questions or issues you might have."

"I've just entered the program, but I can already see some pros and cons. Some of the pros are that the advisors respond to questions from students pretty quickly. Additionally, it has been extremely easy to get information from staff. One of the cons is the access to material on the school website. The unique web portal has a lot of information, but much of it isn't intuitively accessible."
