"Wonderful master's programs! The School of Public Health is a great place to get your graduate degree!"

"Fantastic program, academic quality has nothing to envy to other ''top tier'' universities like University of Michigan, MIT, UC Berkeley, and other universities with a seemingly higher prestige. The graduate program at UMCP, feels to me, like an underrated graduate school. Any graduate student from UMCP is at the level (or even higher) of any graduate student from any top tier university. One seriously big problem of UMD are stipends at the absurdly high cost of living of College Park, which is dominated by the prices of DC metropolitan area. The stipends are far from commensurate with the cost of living. It is also something notorious the lack of subsidized housing. The ''supposedly subsidized housing'' provided by the university is neither enough, since there are just a few apartments, neither subsidized, since it is way too expensive."

"The faculty are the school's biggest resource - amazing professors who actively encourage students to get involved with research and programs. The setting is suburban but buses and shuttles make it pretty easy to get around even if you don't have a car. A lot of the graduate student SPH classes are at night (4-7 or 7-10) which might dissuade some people, but it's nice to have the whole day for work or research."

"The program is very flexible in what classes you take; my thesis was much more molecular biology/genetics and so I went out of the program and took most of my courses from biochemistry and biology rather than staying within the animal science department. The department is relatively small which had the positive aspect of getting to know all professors and staff well, including our chair."

"Pros: Diverse department such that faculty vary widely in disciplines and you can get a very well-rounded education; department supports students with graduate research assistantships; good social dynamic of department; quality teaching and courses. Cons: Cost of living in the area is really high which means many students still take out loans on top of the assistantship salary; crime is an issue such that I do not feel comfortable walking around in less-active areas of campus after dark."

"Pros: Professors and advisors willing to help students achieve their research goals; professors and students willing to collaborate on research projects; rigorous academic program; interdisciplinary work; opportunities to overlap in program specialties Cons: None"

"Pros: I have a great relationship with the faculty in the sociology department and I have received excellent mentorship and career advice. I also find that faculty are generally accessible. I think that the workload associated with coursework is average but like most Ph.d programs it is what you get published that counts. The university shuttle system is awesome and there is a nearby metro stop which makes getting to a from campus easy for those who don't want to drive. The graduate program is very culturally and racially diverse and there is a god sense of community amongst grad students. Being close to DC is huge bonus on the job front and is generally an interesting place to live with tons of fun stuff to do. Cons: Mentorship and financial support is unequally distributed. The faculty don't seem to be on the same page and the program changes very slowly. Living in the DC metro area is expensive. College Park is nothing to write home about."

"The program is great! Supportive faculty and students, lots of opportunities. The location and cost of living are the biggest drawbacks."

"The pros, great location, staff availability, campus resources available, course content. The cons, lack of financial courses, need to take SPH cores, program premium, lack of info readily available for application, size of cohort."

"I am a commuter student, so I rarely take advantage of on-campus amenities. However, I did appreciate being able to take a wide variety of courses outside my subject area as a part of my graduate work. It gave me a well rounded education. My only pitfall with the program is that many of the faculty are busy and more interested in their own research, so sometimes seeking them out for guidance and assistance can be challenging."

"Funding is tight- hard to live off of stipend; faculty are mostly helpful; biggest issue would be not having clear examples of what to do with degree outside of academia."

"I enjoy the program very much. The professors are supportive and the department fosters a climate of cooperation for academic achievement. College Park is not so great, but Washington D.C. is only a few metro stops away."
