"Good school, but surroundings are below average"

"The problem is mainly on an administrative level, but unfortunately it causes problems with all other aspects of graduate school. The faculty have no backbone, the administration (even at the level of secretaries) has more power than the faculty, and profits are favored over actual education. The graduate programs vary (and tend to be pretty good) but funding is not good, making the experience much harder. In addition, I've heard many more bad experiences with advisors than good ones. Graduate education is more of a teacher-student relationship than a mentor-mentee or apprenticeship. Still, the programs somehow attract good students, so I guess we're all gluttons for punishment."
